Lemons are extraordinarily rich sources of healing compounds that improve immunity, strengthen blood vessels, help skin to heal and sometimes even block certain cell changes that can lead to cancer. A quick rub of lemon in the armpits helps to combat unpleasant smells, a squeeze of lemon added to hot water and honey is the perfect sore-throat elixir, and lemon is a vital ingredient when it comes to making homemade cough mixtures. So, can lemons really help my family stay fit?

I am writing this while watching a documentary on National Geographic, so apologies in advance for any missing words or trailing thoughts…..But I did just see an Early Man, HEllO WHAT’S GOING ON! Okay. Let’s talk lemons. They work in sweet and savoury dishes, in desserts and drinks. And they’ve been around for a long, long time.

A single lemon contains 40 mg vitamin C, the full recommended daily target intake. We don’t worry about scurvy anymore because there are so many sources of Vitamin C in our diet, but; however, lemons provide a host of other benefits. Pucker up, mothers! Never underestimate the power of vitamin C- or the tried and trusted advice to drink lemony drinks when you or your family gets a cold. The vitamin C in lemons reduces levels of histamine, the chemical that contributes to stuffed noses and runny eyes.

The body uses vitamin ‘C’ to boost the activity of immune cells and manufacture collagen, which is a tissue-building substance that assists in wound healing.

It is also a powerful antioxidant and reduces levels of unstable cell-damaging molecules known as free radicals, and helps to guard against heart diseases. (Several studies have shown that low levels of vitamin C increase the risk of a heart attack.) When cholesterol becomes oxidised – attacked by free radicals- it’s more likely to turn into artery-blocking plaque.

Are Lemons Safe for Babies

As a new mother, I didn’t know how to deal with the upset tummy of an infant and did what I had always known was the only solution to an upset tummy- diluted lemon juice. It cured an upset tummy just like that. You too can treat your baby by feeding the baby a glass of water with a tablespoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. However, do ask your doctor before introducing new foods to the baby.

Lemon Beauty benefits

If applied often enough to age spots, lemon juice will eventually fade marks of maturity. This is because the vitamin C in lemon is anti-pigmentation and reduces melanin You can also dab it into acne for faster healing. Beauty and fashion brands are also developing an intimate connection with nature. Now more than ever is a great time to rethink beauty and style needs in preparation for your next Zoom meetings, home workouts and after five delights.

Lemon makes an ideal home remedy for your acne problem because of its antibacterial properties. Squeeze a lemon and apply the juice with a cotton ball directly on acne. Leave it on the skin until the juice dries out completely. Rinse with water. I have oily skin and lemon juice works like an elixir. Researchers are now investigating Limonene for its potential application as a cancer treatment and preventive, especially breast cancer. Scientists tested the substance- in the laboratory – on human breast cancer cells and found that it inhibited their growth. Limonene also causes Oestrogen to break down into a weaker form in the body, which is important because raised oestrogen levels are linked with a higher risk of breast cancer. In conclusion- A word of caution
